| Q. |
If
I hire Elite Web Studio to do my web design, do I have
to use Elite Web Studio to host that website? |
| A. |
No. You can use the hosting of your choice, though different
hosts offer dramatically different packages, server
types, etc. Your designer will need to know who your
choice of host is before beginning your design, to
ensure they have a clear picture of what technologies,
etc. will run on your chosen server.
We do offer a very competitive
hosting package at only US $6.00 per month with
an easy-to-use control panel and many other bonus
features, giving you full control over your own domain,
adding email addresses, etc. The bottom line is to
choose what works best for you and your company. We
host on Unix servers. |
| Q. |
How
long does it take to set up a hosting account if I choose
to host with you? |
| A. |
If you are choosing solely to host with us and are not
waiting for design work, your account is usually set
up within a couple of hours of payment. |
| Q. |
What
does "search engine optimization" mean? Is
it hard? |
| A. |
Search engine optimization is a process in which your website
(preferably as it is designed) is prepared for placement
on the web. There are many considerations in optimizing
a site for search engine placement. There has to be
a balance between functionality and aesthetics. This
is often where many designers fall short and provide
more of one than the other or strictly one and not the
other. It is important to review your designer's previous
work, usually in the form of a portfolio, to get a feel
for how well (or not) they have provided this balance. |
| Q. |
What is cross-browser compatibility? Is it important? |
| A. |
When someone asks if your site is compatible cross-browser,
they mean can it be viewed equally well in various browsers.
When designing a website, it is crucial that a designer
take the time to check how the website will look in
different browsers, different versions of those browsers
and on different operating systems. The primary Windows
browsers available are Internet Explorer, Netscape,
Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and AOL. The primary
MAC browsers are Internet Explorer for MAC and Safari.
Often what will render properly in one browser will
look absolutely horrific in another browser, which is
why it is an absolute must that your designer be familiar
with these issues and be prepared to work to circumvent
any inconsistencies that arise in the design of your
site. |
| Q. |
How
long will it take you to build my website? |
| A. |
The length of time to build your website will vary depending
on your specifications, the technologies used to build
that website, and our availability when we contract.
Usually if you are completely prepared, have all of
your content written and we have a mutual understanding
of the general design idea, your site will be built
within a few weeks. On some limited occasions, we have
built sites on a rush basis, for an additional fee. |
| Q. |
Will
I see my website before it's live to the public? |
| A. |
Yes! You will have the final approval before the site goes
live. It would be bad business to go live with a site
that was not completely prepared. We refuse to put up
sites that are "under construction". |
| Q. |
What
are Meta Tags? |
| A. |
Meta tags are identifying "hidden" html tags within
the code of your web pages. These tags identify your
page title, your key words, site description, author
and sometimes instruct search engines to return at a
specific time to re-index your site. It is sometimes
controversial that meta tags are REQUIRED, but many
of the older search engines will be using the older
technologies for some time to come. We highly recommend
that all sites continue to have meta tags. |
| Q. |
What
does "keyword rich text" mean? |
| A. |
Keyword rich text means that your website textual content should
have as many of the keywords that you believe people
will search for when searching for your product or service.
This text should be "rich" with your keywords
in context to what you are providing. Do NOT put "hidden"
text in your pages. This means text that is near to
or the same color as the page color. Search engines,
if this is found, will dump your site from their archives. |
| Q. |
What
does "Standards Compliant " mean? |
| A. |
A standards-compliant website is one that adheres to specific rules and standards in order to create the greatest level of accessibility possible to everyone.
A standards-compliant website separates the actual site content from the site style and design, which ultimately makes your website perform better in search engines, as well as making it much more easily accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities.
It is possible to create a beautiful website that is not standards compliant, and many designers do so, which can in the long run result in your business losing money if it cannot be accessed and navigated by everyone. Limiting your audience is limiting your income.
A standards-compliant website also makes your site much, much easier to maintain, as the majority of the style and layout of the website is located in one file that can be quickly updated. NOTE: This does not mean maintenance related to content, only to layout, such as fonts, colors, that type of thing.
